How to use your own words for Tideswell's records
Rename Tideswell's built-in kinds of record, such as Supplier to Vendor, from Settings › Terminology, and put the original word back.
Settings › Terminology is where an admin chooses what the workspace calls the kinds of record Tideswell ships, such as Supplier, Purchase Order, Customer and Task.
The screen describes itself as "What this workspace calls each of Tideswell's record types." A new word shows for everyone in the workspace, and never changes the records themselves. See What is workspace admin? for the rest of Settings.
Fairgreen Golf Co. calls the mills it buys from vendors, so it renames Supplier to Vendor. Portside Mills and Kaimen Knitwear keep every order, term and contact they had.
Before you start
Settings sits at the foot of the menu for admins of the workspace, and this is one of its rows. Saving a word needs the Rename organization row in Settings › Permissions, which admins have by default. See How to set who can do what.
How do you rename one?
Each kind of record is one row, in alphabetical order of Tideswell's own word. The row holds two boxes: the name for one, and the plural for more than one.
- Open Settings › Terminology.
- Find the row, for example Supplier.
- Type your word in the first box, such as "Vendor".
- Type the plural in the second box, such as "Vendors".
- Press Save on that row.
Save wakes up once you change a box, and each row saves on its own. Words chosen while your workspace was being set up show in these boxes too, ready to change the same way.
How do you see what Tideswell calls it?
A renamed row shows a line under the boxes, such as "Tideswell calls this Supplier / Suppliers." That line appears only once a row has its own word, so a row without one is still using Tideswell's.
The help pages use Tideswell's own words. When a page mentions a supplier, that line tells you which of your words it means.
How do you put Tideswell's word back?
Press Reset on the row. It appears beside Save once a row has been renamed, and returns both the name and the plural to Tideswell's words.
Your records stay exactly as they were, whichever word is showing.
Where does the new word show?
In the places that name the kind of record inside a sentence or a list. A trigger in Brain › Workflows reads "When a vendor is created", and the lists on Settings › Stages and Settings › Custom fields use your plural.
Menu labels, Settings rows, page titles and the rows on Settings › Permissions keep Tideswell's word. So Buying › Suppliers still reads Suppliers, and a menu path in these help pages always matches your screen.
How do you rename your own Objects?
On the Object itself, not here. An Object is a kind of record your team defined, such as Repairs, and its name and plural belong to it.
Open Settings › Objects, click the Object and change its names on the Configuration tab. How to rename, reorder or retire an Object covers it, and What is an Object? explains what an Object is.
What else can a workspace name for itself?
Several lists in Settings are yours to word.
- Settings › Stages renames the stages a purchase order, an outreach, a special order, a project item and a production order move through. See How to move a purchase order through its stages.
- Settings › Departments holds your teams, covered in How to set up departments.
- Settings › Sub-task types and Settings › Outreach types hold the kinds of sub-task and outreach your team uses. See How to set up the kinds of work your team does and How to set up your kinds of outreach.
- Settings › Custom fields adds boxes of your own to suppliers, covered in How to add your own field to a supplier.
