# How to see what needs you

Tideswell pins three rows at the top of your sidebar because they answer three different
questions. **Inbox** is what changed, **My tasks** is what you owe, and **Urgent** is what is
on fire across the whole business.

If you learn nothing else about <Ref to="tasks" />, learn which of the three to open.

## What is in your Inbox? [#what-is-in-your-inbox]

Everything addressed to you personally. Somebody assigned you a task, commented on one,
mentioned you with an @, replied to you, completed or reopened something of yours, or a task
you were waiting on became unblocked.

Stock and order alerts land here too, alongside a note when the morning brief is ready. The
badge on the sidebar row counts what you have not read.

Click a row and two things happen: it goes read, and you land on the thing it was about. That
might be a task panel, a chat message, a thread, the brief, or a store screen.

**Mark all read** at the top clears every dot at once. Use it when you have been away and the
list is longer than it is worth reading.

Your Inbox is yours. Nobody else can see it, and it is separate from the activity feed on a
record, which is shared and shows what everyone did.

## What is in My tasks? [#what-is-in-my-tasks]

Every task assigned to you, from every department and every project, in one list. It is
grouped by when it is due: **Overdue**, **Today**, **This week**, **Later** and **No due
date**, with a collapsed **Done** section at the foot.

"This week" means the next seven days rather than the calendar week, so the list stays useful
on a Thursday.

The **+** on any group header adds a task straight into it, with the due date already filled
in to match. Adding into **Today** dates it today. Adding into **This week** dates it three
days out.

One thing to know: this list is what you are **assigned**, not what you created. A task you
raised and handed to Priya leaves your list the moment you assign it, which is the point.

If your workspace uses cycles, the picker in the header filters the whole list down to one.
<Ref to="projects/cycles" /> covers what a cycle is.

## What is in Urgent? [#what-is-in-urgent]

Every unfinished task in the workspace at the top priority level, grouped by department with
each team's colour dot. It is a view of a priority rather than a list you add to, so a task
appears here the moment somebody sets its priority to **Urgent** and leaves when it is
finished or downgraded.

Note that the Tasks home screen calls this same view **Mission-critical** on its header
button. Two names, one screen.

Setting a task to **High** does not put it here. Urgent is the top level on its own, which is
what keeps the screen worth looking at.

## What is on the Tasks home screen? [#what-is-on-the-tasks-home-screen]

A summary rather than a working list. **Due soon** shows up to eight of your own unfinished
tasks that are overdue, due today, or due this week. **Mission-critical** shows the five most
recent urgent tasks in the workspace.

Underneath, a plain-English feed of the last ten things that happened on tasks anywhere in
the business: who assigned what, who commented, what got completed or reopened.

Both strips are deliberately short. When you want the whole picture rather than the top of
it, use **My tasks** and **Urgent**, which is what the **View all** link does.

## How do I open a task without losing my place? [#how-do-i-open-a-task-without-losing-my-place]

Click its title anywhere. A panel slides in over whatever you were looking at, and closing it
with the **X**, the dimmed background, or the **Escape** key returns you to the same list,
scrolled to the same place, with the same filters still applied.

Everything on that panel is editable in place, covered in <Ref to="tasks/edit-a-task" />.

To finish a task without opening anything, click the circle at the left of its row. Click the
green tick again to reopen it.

## Why is my Inbox quiet when I expected a buzz? [#why-is-my-inbox-quiet-when-i-expected-a-buzz]

Reading a row in your Inbox and getting a push notification on your phone are two different
systems, and the phone one has three switches in front of it.

The workspace automation has to be on, your own notification toggle has to be on, and the
alert has to land outside your quiet hours. <Ref to="notifications" /> walks through all
three in order, which is the fastest way to find which one is off.
