# How to file documents in folders

Folders keep the **Work › Documents** list short. Fairgreen Golf Co. files its returns policy and
fabric care guide under Policies, and every shoot brief under Shoot briefs.

Start at
<Ref to="documents" /> for what documents are.

## Before you start [#before-you-start]

Folders use the same permission rows on **Settings › Permissions** as documents do:

* **Create documents** lets you make a folder. Members have it by default.
* **Edit documents** lets you move documents and rename a folder. Members have it by default.
* **Delete documents** lets you delete a folder. Leads have it by default.

## How do you create a folder? [#how-do-you-create-a-folder]

1. Go to **Work › Documents**.
2. Press **New folder**, beside **New document** at the top of the list.
3. Type a name of up to 100 characters.
4. Press **Create folder**.

The folder appears as a card above the list, in name order with your other folders. **New folder**
lives on the main list, so every folder sits side by side there.

## How do you move a document into a folder? [#how-do-you-move-a-document-into-a-folder]

Drag its row onto the folder card. The card highlights while you hold the document over it, and
a message confirms the move when you let go.

Or hover the row, open its **⋯** menu and choose **Move to**, then pick the folder. This works
inside a folder as well, so use it to move a document from one folder straight to another.

## How do you take a document back out? [#how-do-you-take-a-document-back-out]

Open the folder, hover the document's row, open its **⋯** menu and choose **Move to**, then **No
folder**. The document goes back to the main list.

## How do you start a document inside a folder? [#how-do-you-start-a-document-inside-a-folder]

Open the folder and press **New document**. The new document is filed in that folder from the
start, so there is nothing to move afterwards. Writing it is covered in
<Ref to="documents/write-and-format" />.

## How do you rename or delete a folder? [#how-do-you-rename-or-delete-a-folder]

Hover the folder card on **Work › Documents** and open its **⋯** menu.

* **Rename** opens the name box with the current name filled in. Change it and press **Rename**.
* **Delete** asks you to confirm first. The documents inside move back to the main list, and when
the folder holds any, the confirmation says how many will move.

Deleting a folder keeps every document in it. To delete the documents themselves, see
<Ref to="documents/write-and-format" />.

## Who sees my folders? [#who-sees-my-folders]

Everyone in your workspace. Folders are shared, like the documents inside them, so a folder you
make shows on everyone's **Documents** list.

Name folders for what is in them, such as Policies, Shoot briefs or Supplier notes, so the whole
team files things the same way. Finding a document again is covered in
<Ref to="documents/link-and-find" />.
