This is the feature that makes chat here different from chat anywhere else, and it takes about a minute to learn. ## What can you tag? [#what-can-you-tag] Nine kinds of thing, searched together: **People**, **Documents**, **Tasks**, **Editorials**, **Products**, **Collections**, **Customers**, **Channels** and **Dates**. Type **@** or press the @ button beside the paperclip, then keep typing to search. You can type across spaces, so "@matt jones" finds a full name without the menu closing. Move with the up and down arrows, pick with **Enter** or **Tab**, or click with the mouse. ## What happens to what you tag? [#what-happens-to-what-you-tag] It becomes a coloured chip, visible in the box before you send in the same colour it will have once sent. The colours are consistent so you can read a message at a glance: **blue** for people, **violet** for tasks, **green** for channels and customers, **amber** for editorials and products, **rose** for documents. Once sent, the chips are live. Click one and a task opens in Tasks, a document opens in Documents, a channel opens that channel, and a product or collection opens in Shopify in a new tab. A tagged customer is the best of them: hover or click the chip and their card opens in place, with their details, without leaving the conversation. See . ## Why does this matter? [#why-does-this-matter] Because it turns a sentence into something the next person can act on. "The merino quarter-zip is running low, can somebody look at the Portside order" is a message. The same message with the product and the purchase order tagged is a message anybody can work from without asking which one you meant. ## How do you notify a whole channel? [#how-do-you-notify-a-whole-channel] Pick **@channel** or **@here** from the top of the menu. They do the same thing: everybody in the channel who has not muted it is notified. Anyone can use them, so use them sparingly. An @channel replaces the ordinary notification rather than adding a second one, so nobody gets buzzed twice. ## What are the date shortcuts? [#what-are-the-date-shortcuts] **Today**, **Tomorrow** and **In a week**, which drop the plain date into your message. Small, but it removes the most common cause of confusion in a work chat: writing "Friday" and having half the team read it as a different Friday. ## Why are there no products in the menu? [#why-are-there-no-products-in-the-menu] Because products and collections only search once you start typing. Opening a blank @ menu deliberately shows no Shopify results, which is what keeps the menu instant. Type two or three letters and they appear. They need a connected Shopify store, per . ## How much does each section show? [#how-much-does-each-section-show] Each is capped so the menu stays scannable rather than becoming a list you scroll: a handful of people, documents and tasks, and a few more products, collections, customers, editorials and channels. Type more letters to narrow rather than scrolling. The menu is built for searching, not browsing. ## Who gets notified? [#who-gets-notified] The people you tag, provided they can still see the channel. Tagging somebody who cannot see it does not notify them, which is what stops a private conversation leaking through a mention. The menu never lists a channel you cannot see either. Every mention aimed at you lands in your **Inbox**, linking to the exact message. See . ## Why is a tag showing as plain text? [#why-is-a-tag-showing-as-plain-text] Because the message arrived live and your browser has not loaded that record yet. Reload and it renders as a chip. Note also that a document renamed after being tagged keeps its old name in old messages. The link still works, and the message stays an honest record of what it was called at the time.
